GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE CHILLINGHAM WILD CATTLE

The Wild Cattle

Visit this unique herd of wild cattle in the park at Chillingham, the sole survivors of herds that once roamed the forests of Britain. They are truly wild, and potentially dangerous, so must be approached with care. Visitors are able to see the cattle only when accompanied by the Warden, who will ensure your safety, take you as close as possible and talk about the cattle and their history.

The Chillingham Wild Cattle are the only cattle in the world that have remained pure. No outside blood has been introduced. They still roam wild in their historical surroundings in the 365 acre park at Chillingham, which was enclosed in the 13th century to provide food and hunting. Their numbers vary between 40 and 60. This is the total world population. They can only be seen at Chillingham.

The park also contains many other interesting creatures. Roe Deer and Fallow Deer can often be seen, while the Red Squirrels, Foxes and Badgers who live here are more wary and are not so often seen.

The park is also home to over 50 species of birds, and is the most northerly outpost of the Nuthatch.

The lower part of the park contains a tangle of alder trees and looks much as it was in medieval times.

The park was landscaped in the 1760's, with many beeches and oaks planted by the Earl of Tankerville. Other species of trees were planted in the middle of the 19th century, notably a Wellingtonia and one of the earliest Sitka Spruce trees to be planted in Britain.
